Why do I get teeth stains?
Teeth stains can be caused by a variety of factors, and they are generally classified into two main types: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are those that occur on the surface of the teeth, the enamel, typically due to the consumption of certain foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries. Smoking can also lead to these external stains. Poor oral hygiene is another common cause, as plaque buildup can trap pigments from food and drinks.
Intrinsic stains, on the other hand, occur within the tooth, often as a result of factors such as trauma, aging, or excessive fluoride exposure. Certain medications, such as tetracycline antibiotics, can also cause discoloration by affecting the inner layers of the tooth. Additionally, genetics and health conditions may contribute to intrinsic staining. Poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup, can exacerbate both types of stains.
The severity of staining depends on the type, frequency of exposure, and the individual’s oral care routine. Regular dental checkups, brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings can help prevent and manage both extrinsic and intrinsic stains, promoting a healthier, brighter smile.
During a dental clean, polishing can improve the appearance of your teeth by removing surface stains, which may make your teeth look brighter and shinier. However, it does not actually whiten teeth in the sense of lightening their natural color or addressing deeper discoloration. If you’re looking for a more noticeable whitening effect, professional teeth whitening treatments are more effective.
How teeth whitening works
Here at Elements Dental, we offer 3 options for Teeth Whitening:
- Take-home whitening
- Chairside whitening
- Chairside whitening, topped up with take-home whitening
Take-home whitening treatment is suitable for patients wanting a more pronounced change of shade and okay to do it over a period of time. For the first appointment, we will take digital photos, scan and make you a pair of custom made bleaching trays, which takes around 7 working days to fabricate. When the trays are ready, we will see you for the second appointment, where you will be issued the trays as well as some whitening solution to take home, with instructions on how to apply the gel safely. Optimum results are achieved if bleaching trays are worn overnight or 2-4 hours straight during the day, over 10-14 days. Lastly, we’ll schedule a review appointment 2 weeks later and take updated photos to compare, and give further advice as needed.
Chairside whitening is suitable if you want a moderate change of shade in the shortest amount of time. You will need to come in for an appointment, which will take around 90 minutes. After all the protective measures are placed to shield your lips, gums and tongue during the procedure, we will place the whitening gel on your teeth and activate the process by means of a special lamp. The gel will be reapplied at intervals.
Although the whitening effect takes a much shorter time for chairside whitening, it does not last as long as the take-home whitening. Hence we usually recommend chairside whitening only if you need results quickly, have a very busy schedule or prefer minimal effort.
For best results, you can consider starting with chairside whitening to give your teeth a good kick start, followed by take-home whitening to refine and enhance the brightness to your desired level. This way, you can have the best of both worlds with the most optimal results in a shorter time!
Is teeth whitening safe?
Explain how safe is Elements Dental’s teeth whitening service. Can also differentiate safety when having a teeth whitening done by a professional vs. DIY teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening is generally safe when done correctly and under the guidance of a dental professional. Professional whitening treatments, whether done in-office or at home with a dentist-provided kit, are designed to be effective and safe for most people.
However, overuse or improper use of whitening products can lead to side effects such as tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, or uneven results. It’s important to follow instructions carefully and consult our dentist before starting any whitening treatment, especially if you have sensitive teeth, existing dental issues, or concerns about the safety of the products.
When purchasing over-the-counter whitening products, it’s important to exercise caution, particularly those that promise instant or overly dramatic results. These products often contain high levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can potentially damage your teeth permanently. Whitening toothpastes with gritty or large abrasive particles can wear down your enamel over time, leading to further oral issues. Additionally, non-customized bleaching trays may cause the whitening gel to leak, which can burn your gums and, with prolonged use, result in permanent damage. If you’ve been using such products and experience discomfort, such as a burning sensation or increased sensitivity, it’s crucial to consult with a dentist immediately.

Who’s Suitable for Teeth Whitening Treatments?
Explain who are qualified to do a teeth whitening treatment, who are not qualified and why they are not qualified for the treatment.
While most individuals can benefit from teeth whitening, there are certain factors that should be considered before deciding to undergo the procedure. Here’s a guide to help you determine if teeth whitening treatments are right for you.
Healthy Teeth and Gums
The ideal candidate for teeth whitening has generally healthy teeth and gums. If you have active gum disease, cavities, or other oral health issues, it’s essential to address these concerns before whitening your teeth. Whitening treatments may cause irritation or exacerbate these conditions, making it necessary to ensure your teeth and gums are in optimal health before undergoing any cosmetic procedure.
People without Sensitivity Issues
Teeth whitening treatments can cause temporary tooth sensitivity, especially for individuals who already have sensitive teeth. If you have a history of tooth sensitivity or discomfort when consuming hot or cold foods, it’s essential to discuss your options with our dentist. There are now treatments available that are formulated to reduce sensitivity, but it’s still important to assess whether you’re comfortable with the potential side effects before committing to the procedure.
Those Who Aren’t Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Although teeth whitening is generally considered safe, it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. The safety of whitening agents like hydrogen peroxide for unborn babies or infants has not been fully studied. It’s always best to wait until after pregnancy or breastfeeding to undergo any cosmetic dental procedures.
People ages 16 and above
Teeth whitening is generally not recommended for children, especially those under the age of 16. This is because their teeth and gums are still developing, and the whitening agents may cause sensitivity or harm to the enamel. Additionally, children’s teeth may have different compositions compared to adult teeth, and whitening treatments may not be effective or safe for them. If a child has significant discoloration or other dental concerns, it’s best to consult with a dentist to explore safer alternatives or wait until they are older. In cases of permanent staining or cosmetic concerns, the dentist may suggest other treatments that are more appropriate for younger patients.
Those Willing to Commit to Maintenance
Teeth whitening is not permanent, and its effects can fade over time. To maintain a bright, white smile, it’s essential to commit to a good oral hygiene routine and avoid foods and habits that can cause staining. Regular touch-ups, either at home or with professional treatments, may be necessary to preserve your results.
If you’re uncertain on your suitability, it’s best to consult with a dentist, who is in the best position to assess whether you’re a suitable candidate for teeth whitening treatment.
Teeth Whitening FAQs
Will there be sensitivity?
It’s common to experience some tooth sensitivity after whitening treatments, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours. This sensitivity occurs because the whitening agents temporarily open the pores of your enamel, making your teeth more responsive to temperature changes. To minimise this unpleasant experience, we specifically choose our preferred whitening brands and also include a desensitising paste for you to use
How long does tooth whitening last?
Teeth whitening results are dependent on varying factors, such as the type of teeth whitening treatment you underwent, diet, oral hygiene, and lifestyle habits. On average, results typically last between 6 months and 2 years. Periodic touch-ups can help maintain your desired teeth shade.
Is teeth whitening permanent
While professional whitening treatments can significantly brighten your teeth, no teeth whitening process will give you permanently white teeth. The good news is that there is another way to have permanent white teeth – by having veneers.
How white should my teeth be?
Teeth whitening treatments can brighten your smile, but the extent of whitening depends on factors like the condition of your teeth, the degree of staining, and genetics. While whitening can lighten teeth by up to 8 shades, it only affects the surface, and a yellowish tint may remain due to the natural color of the inner tooth layer, dentine. Dental fillings, blemishes, and structural defects may also prevent optimal whitening results.
In terms of the level of whiteness for your teeth, it really depends on your personal preference. However, a good gauge is by comparing the teeth colour to the whites of your eyes. The colour of your teeth should not be brighter than the whites of your eyes.
If your teeth does not reach the desired level of whiteness after whitening treatments, you may want to look into veneers, which allow you to choose any shade that is as white as you prefer.
Teeth whitening cost
The cost of whitening depends on your chosen option. Prices typically start from $250. Do consult our dentists at the start of your visit for an exact quote.
